Blogs / The future of China

Posted on Wednesday January 24th 2007 @ 16:13 in Steve’s blog

I am about to invest in China (better late than never!) and found it fascinating to read some of the current material on the likely growth of this market in 2007, none more so than an article I came across in a magazine called ‘Prospect’. This is a gripping exchange between the very well known Will Hutton and Meghnad Desai of the LSE. Whether you are already in China, want to be in China or are simply interested in the China story I urge you to spend some time reading it by following the link.

I know many people who have tried to set up companies in China or trade in China. I regulary have to deal with Chinese companies on a day to day basis (except for next week - chinese new year - they will be taking the whole week off). None have ever managed to "break into the maket" in their own field. There is so much protectionism (and of course local corruption) - goal posts constantly moved - and it is a huge country - so what happens in one part is completely different than in another part.

I have alway taken with a "pinch" of salt the news that a UK company has just signed a deal in China, and will be making so much money in the future as a reason to consider buying shares in that company. Of course I may be wrong, but the "Playing field" in china definately is not level and may never be for anyone - even the chinese.

That is a very interesting take on the Chinese marketplace. I personally have not invested in Chinese companies, but I did come across this article from wallst.net (http://www.wallst.net/editorials/article.asp?id=709) and it concerns Comtech, which trades on the NASDAQ. The company deals with telecom manufacturing and distribution and there is still a high demand for it in China. Not to mention the country will host the 2008 summer Olympics in Beijing, so if anything, I think China will remain a hot topic (and positive one) for many investors in the years to come. We will see...
